Khai Liew
http://khailiew.com/work
Khai Liew was born in Malaysia and arrived in Australia in 1971. His early pragmatism serendipitously led to a decades-long championing of Australian colonial furniture. As a specialist conservator, consultant and valuer, Liew salvaged and actively promoted this important component of Australian material culture. He curated many significant private collections, and public collections in state and national art institutions now showcase numerous definitive examples of Australian pioneer vernacular provided and conserved by Liew. Drawing on his cultural heritage and his experience and knowledge as a conservator, Liew creates work characterised by a fusion of old and new, regional and international, and is widely recognised for his unique and passionate contribution to the development of a modernist Australian design aesthetic. Ultimately, his oeuvre stands as a highly personal and distinctive statement about beauty and utility. Liew’s works have exhibited at institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Design Museum London, and the Triennale di Milano. His pieces are represented in the public collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Powerhouse Museum, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Liew is Adjunct Professor, School of Art, Architecture and Design, University of South Australia, a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia, and is an Approved Valuer for the AustralianGovernment’s Cultural Gifts Program.
